PA-AG: Shapiro (D) Slams Rafferty (R) For Co-Sponsoring PA Senate GOP's Extreme Anti-Choice Bill

Received this e-mail today from Josh Shapiro’s (D. PA) Attorney General campaign:

In a Harrisburg committee room yesterday, Josh's opponent State Senator John Rafferty ignored the law to put politics ahead of women's health and safety.
Because of Senator Rafferty, the most extreme anti-choice legislation in the nation is just one vote away from passage. Rafferty's bill puts women's lives at risk and is clearly unconstitutional, but he co-sponsored it and voted for it anyway -- sign the petition and tell the Senate to reject HB1948.

This bill violates court rulings going back decades from both the Pennsylvania Supreme Court and the U.S. Supreme Court. In fact, just three weeks ago, the U.S. Supreme Court rejected H.B. 2, a Texas law that shut down clinics and restricted a woman's right to make her own reproductive health care decisions. As Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg said in her concurring opinion, "laws like H.B. 2 that 'do little or nothing for health, but rather strew impediments to abortion,'cannot survive judicial inspection."

Here in Pennsylvania, not only did Senator Rafferty choose to ignore precedent, he didn't listen to families or doctors who showed how this bill puts women's health at risk by arbitrarily banning safe, legal medical procedures.

As Attorney General, Josh Shapiro will always stand up to protect women's rights -- and he's proud to be endorsed by Planned Parenthood PA PAC.
