This Week in the War on Women

Every so often, there’s a story that’s a prefect catch-22 of patriarchy.  This one is just….WTF?

Joseph Irby was arrested for ramming his estranged wife’s car and running her off the road.  And then:

A judge granted Joseph Irby pretrial release with the condition that he not own, possess or carry firearms. Hearing this, Courtney Irby went to her husband’s residence and located his two guns ― an assault rifle and a handgun ― and took them to Lakeland Police Department.

....She told the police officer on duty that her husband had been arrested the day before, and that she wanted to hand in his guns because she didn’t believe he would turn them in.

.... Police arrested her and she was charged with armed burglary of a dwelling and grand theft of a firearm.

As always, this diary is a team effort.  Thanks to ramara, elenacarlena, karij, SandraLLAP and the WOW crew for links and discussion.

Reproductive Rights:

Rep. Pramily Jayapal's NYT op-ed is a remarkable account of her decision to have an abortion.  Some other women politicians have also told their own stories of abortion.

Lack of Medicaid coverage blocked 29 percent of abortion seekers from getting the procedure, study says.

A court rules that this administration’s domestic gag rule can go into effect.

Rhode Island Gov. Gina Raimondo signs Abortion Rights Bill.

UK court orders a forced abortion on woman with significant mental disabilities.  This is a very concerning case of someone else deciding what’s “for her own good.”

Violence:

E. Jean Carroll is the latest woman to report being sexually assaulted by Donald Trump.

Syrian journalist Hiba Barakat on how women are surviving the war.

Egypt’s Al-Azhar retreats from fatwa that would allow beating women.

Here we go again:  the rape kit crisis.

Spanish Supreme Court concludes that the 5 men who called themselves the “wolf pack” were guilty of rape.  Although the victim didn’t consent, a lower court had downgraded the charge because the five men “hadn’t used violence or intimidation.”  The Supreme Court reasoned that being overpowered by five men was by definition intimidating.

Workplace issues:

Female sports journalists still face rampant sexism on the job.

US women’s team and US Soccer agree to mediation over the ongoing pay discrimination.

A picture with women photoshopped in, highlights tech’s diversity problem.

Swiss women go on strike.

Intersectionality:

Suicide rate for Native American women is up 139%.

Ijeoma Oluo:  The Anger of the White Male Lie.

Good News:

Joy Harjo is the first Native American woman to be named US poet laureate.

Uncategorizable:

I recently diaried the book Invisible Women:  Data Bias in a World Designed for Men, by Caroline Criado Perez.  I highly recommend getting this book!  It’s about what happens when researchers assume that “default human” means “male.”

Action items:

Petition to protect sexual assault victims in Senegal.

Amnesty International petition in support of 10 women human rights defenders.
