The Republican Party has a big problem: Their ideas are deeply unpopular. As a result, they cannot win a majority of votes when actual policy is on the ballot.
Time and time again, they say to let the states decide. The problem is that when given the option (and when Democrats aren’t specifically on the ballot), even so-called red state voters choose to vote for rights, not for tyranny. We saw this in this past election cycle, when voters chose to uphold abortion rights in six states, including solidly conservative Kansas, Kentucky, and Montana.
Stung by those losses, red-state Republicans have a new plan: Make it next to impossible to get popular initiatives on the ballot, and if that happens, make it more difficult for them to pass.
